Player’s Guide to KhaerosForewordFirst of all, we would like to welcome you to Khaeros, a persistent world based both on fantasy and on real life cultures and brought to existence as an Ultima Online roleplaying shard. In case you have already read and understood what this is all about and what our rules are, feel free to take a look at our Forums and write up an application for an account.
That being said, let us now proceed to explain some of the unique features you will come across during your stay in our world.
Character CreationRefer to this
illustrated guide, please.
GameplayEven if you are familiar with Ultima Online, you will notice that in Khaeros we have a plethora of new features, custom items, and different systems. Herein, you will find some intructions that will help you to get acclimated with all the novelties.
The first thing you should know about gameplay is that no character is proficient with any kind of armour when they are created. To get one of the three different kinds of armour proficiencies, you will need to buy the appropriate feat, that can be found in the General Feats page of the Feats menu. You can have access to it by using the arrows located on that menu to switch from your class’ or subclass’ page to the general page.
Still regarding armour, soon you will notice that our weapons and armour use different properties for damage. The three basic damage and resistance properties are Blunt, Slashing and Piercing. Different kinds of armour will grant you different amounts of those resistances, in a way that no armour can ever supercede another. The creatures you will stumble upon during gameplay will also have varying resistances. For that reason, it is interesting to test different types of weapons until you find the best weapon to fight each opponent.
The last thing you need to know about armour is that they weigh you down. Some will even prevent you from running at low feat levels (you will need the second level of medium armour to run in medium armour and the third level of heavy armour to run in heavy armour). Even when you are able to run in armour, you will notice that wearing armour results in penalties to your Stamina and Dexterity. In game terms, that means that your character will attack in a slower speed and will be able to run for a shorter period of time than she normally would. Also, bear in mind that most maneuvers, such as Critical Strike, will drain a bit of your stamina when they are performed. So, having less Stamina will also hinder your ability to use the maneuvers you will learn via the feats you acquire with total efficiency.
When hunting in group, always make sure that your companions are in your ally list. This will ensure that, as long as you are all near each other, everyone will gain XP and CP when a creature is defeated. Please, refer to the end of this document for the specific commands to add and remove allies.
Another thing you will no doubt notice is that the currency used to buy and sell things from vendors is the copper coin. However, you will also find silver and gold coins. For that reason, you should know now that one gold coin is worth ten silver coins and that one silver coin is worth ten copper coins. This proportion reflects, to some extent, the different difficulty of finding the minerals of each of those coin types.
For a beginner character, the best way to earn some copper coins is to perform a few jobs. In case there is not another player character around in need of someone to mine, chop wood, or any other such task, you will be able to get a simple quest from one of the various NPCs in your home town. For this reason, it is highly advised that you improve one of your work-related skills. In case you do not want to do that, there is always something you can do without them, such as killing and skinning creatures to sells their hides to an NPC quester or to the city’s Treasurer. The latter will result in more copper pieces, but will not give you any XP or CP, which usually leads beginner characters to resort to the NPC questers at first.
Do not expect to find many coins in creatures, specially unintelligent ones. Our loot tables were designed in such a way that only creatures that have a use for coins will ever carry them around.
Also, please bear in mind that you will only be able to place coins, jewels and gems in your bank box. Should you feel the need to store items of a different nature than those, you will need to buy a house, rent a room in an inn, or rent a proper deposit chest in the bank.
In Khaeros, whenever your character hits zero hit points or less, instead of dying and becoming a ghost, you will merely be knocked unconscious. After a period that varies from fifteen to sixty seconds, she will come to at the very spot where she fell. To prevent creatures from knocking her out again before she even has a chance to escape, we added a invulnerability timer upon waking up. That will give you some seconds to run away from danger. Please notice that being knocked out by players or tougher creatures will result in the loss of a Life Point. Life Points represent your character’s general health and are regained whenever you level. You may also regain them by donating coins to the local church every season. When you reach zero Life Points, you will not be able to come to anymore after being knocked out. That means the death of your character. When your character dies, you will be presented with the option to recreate your character using half the XP and the CP you had.
Finally, pay attention to your character’s hunger and thirst. A hungry or thirsty character will have a hard time around, suffering penalties or even taking damage, depending on how dire is her state.
