Vhalurian nobility is a privileged elite within the bustling city. Members of Noble Houses are granted certain privileges in return for their services to the city and church. Although some Houses from the reign of King Gareth still survive, most were titled much later.

It is required by Vhalurian law that each House render a service to the city or church in some form or another, in order to maintain their title. Any House that fails to do so can expect the King to revoke their title.

Typically, it is not overly difficult for a noble House to maintain their title. As long as the House makes a significant contribution to the city or church, a House can usually expect little trouble. Service among the Knights is common, and is also a privilege reserved for the nobility and a few exemplary commoners. Becoming a Cleric within the Church of Vhaluran is a less common, but satisfactory means of maintaining a House’s title. Some Houses throughout history have also chosen to make regular, sizable contributions of gold and resources to the city to maintain their title.

Nobility may be given or taken at the will of the King alone. These families are exceptional servants of great Vhaluran and are expected to continue their work for the kingdom, and thus, its people.

The Head of a House, their spouse and progeny are considered to be Nobility. The remainder of their family are part of their House, but have no real rights as Nobility.

For anyone wanting to create a noble house, this would be the time to do it. You will need to have 5 players for your house before I'll even look at your application (That's individual players, so making a bunch of characters to play your own relatives won't get you far). And at the bare minimum, two of these characters will have to be actual family members, Husband/Wife, Father/Son or what have you (the more family members the better, in my opinion). Seeing as one single house member with 4 non-related retainers as house members would not be classified as a Noble House, just an individual noble with a lot of hired people.

Only direct family members will gain the benefit of nobility. If you're a member of a house, but are just the cousin of the actual nobles, then you're not noble. Same thing if you're an un-related retainer of some type, you'd be a member of the house, but you yourself would not be nobility.

You will also need to include the History of your house (is it a new house, an old house, an old house that became defunct and has only recently risen up again, etc), any notable characters in it's history, any family traits or additional info you want to provide to add to the information (which will be made public here once accepted, so keep that in mind).. And of course you'd need to list the members of your house and their roles in it, who is the head of the house, for example?. How does your house plan to maintain it's status within the kingdom?, etc.

In other words, short uninformative entries for noble houses will pretty much be dismissed. I'm not going to make this too easy, because I don't think any of us want to see 6 or 7 noble houses running around overnight (specially since there aren't that many keeps or unique surcoats around for noble houses!). And after beta is over, you'll pretty much just have to earn it the old fashioned way, I'm just doing it this way for now to try and jumpstart things a little bit.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me in irc, msn, or pm here on the forums. Also, please PM any applications to me on the forums. Do not post about them publically before they're accepted.

Recent additions addendum:

Every House that is established from herein (year 999) are considered "Non-military" to begin, and will be granted a home in the rich district of town. To be given military status and a Keep along the border of Vhaluran, the House must have a member Knighted and have at least one active retainer who has undergone military training. House Vryce and Fortane are exempt from this rule.

House Fortane

House Fortane was originally formed in the years when Vhalurans father and first King; Gareth Caliborne had taken the shamed nation and led it into its rightful path. Amongst the growing society King Gareth Caliborne had those whom he held close and entrusted with many important tasks and information. One of the primary families that King Gareth held close to him were the Fortane's, a prominent widespread family that contributed to the nations betterment in all sectors of importance. The Fortane's held many responsibilities within the nation given to them by the King. Michael Fortane; A great armorer and weapons smith vowed to never use his hammer for anyone but the Military or the Kings Men and never accept any form of payment in exchange for his crafts. Lucas Fortane; A skilled Military man that protected the King and held the title of one of Gareth's personal guard. Glenith Fortane; A highly ranked member of the church that assisted the men in battle as well as helping guide the King in any spiritual advise he may have needed.

Throughout their many years of service under rule of King Gareth, the Fortane family stood strue to their word carrying out the Kings wishes without question. When word came of the Tyrean soldiers were advancing through Vhalurian lines and if Vhaluran was to overcome the Tyrean soldiers they would have to send all able boddied men to win the battle at hand, the Fortane Family were first to bare arms alongside the King. Through much bloodshed, the King had been taken by a blind arrow from a Tyrean bow that peirced his lung. Many of the Fortane family members and house retainers were also taken down in the same battle.

With such hardship throughout the nation, House Fortane continued to attempt to raise morale although a hard feat with the fall of the son of Vhaulran. As the years passed by and the son of Gareth; Gregor Caliborne was appointed King, the Fortane Family stood next to their countrymen still contributing as best they could.

The last known descendants that stood in the noble house were; Lynel Fortane and Abigail Fortane along with their three children; Nael, Nicolas and Andrea. When their mother and father grew older and eventually passed on. The three children went their own ways to find their path in life. Once they had found their particular niche they would come back and reform the House once again. With word of Nicolas returning to Vhaluran and Nael already a resident the future of House Fortane is beginning to look a little brighter.

House Vryce

Brief History

House Vryce achieved noble status in the times of Darius Tremont when William Vryce was raised to the peerage for his ultimate sacrifice. He is remembered for giving his life for the safety of a group of nobles that were ambushed during a Tyrean raid. His son, James Vryce, had to struggle against the distrust and open hatred of many when Darius lost the throne to Victor Corvinus. James' fatal flaw came in the form of being seen as a remnant of Darius' dark history. This unfortunate twist in history has lead to two outcomes: First, to fight this history James and the later Family heads had to be more dedicated and loyal to the realm than many other nobles, and secondly, it lead to the point that the distrust grew. While there was no open fighting, James died from a poisoned knife in the back.

James' son Gabriel was an enigma. In his young age, while experiencing the hate of so many, he never loathe them in return for it. He was open and friendly to everyone, showing many nobles that there was nothing to fear. Through his acts, once again the house was accepted by most into noble society. Yet like his forefathers, his life did not end through natural causes, but instead through a stray arrow while he and his family were out hunting with their personal entourage.

Damien senior, the next in the line, had to fight an uphill battle to show that he was just as able body and hard working as his father. His life was a harsh one as he came to power in his young age and gave his life for his family. Upholding the virtues of his forefathers his end mirrors that of the other heads of the family in an ironic fashion. To show everyone that has questioned him he went out seeking a dragon to slay but he never returned home.

Nathaniel had to step up and take the head seat of the family at an even younger age than Damien. This was not his only misfortune. Damien senior's younger brother Aidan was dissatisfied that he was only the second son and thus a spare. Seeing the young Nathaniel as an easy target to overthrow, it came to an interim power struggle that split the house into two halves. After years of murder and intrigue Nathaniel succeeded in keeping his seat. He was known to be a fair but strict leader, often aiding those in need. These traits later led to his demise. Following in tradition of the first Vryce, he died while defending some peasants against a Tyrean raid leaving his young and foolish son Damien junior in power.

House Traits

House Vryce is known for their well trained soldiers. From a young age any male family member or vassal is trained in various weapon styles to better defend the house, those under their protection and themselves. While the younger brothers are sent out to be trained as warriors, the first born son (unless a younger son proves to be more worthy) has to learn the traits of a leader in case the current leader passes. This is what spurred Damien to trade the sword for the pen and the armor for expensive clothing to learn the art of diplomacy and fine talking. Also House Vryce, while they train any male retainer to wield arms, do not shy away from using hired blades that have proven themselves worthy to join the House.

Notable Characters

House Lamano

"For Truth and Justice, through Faith and Valor, and by Mercy and Honor."

Brief History-

Asriel Lamano was a stable master with a religious background. During the last part of the Janos Wars, however, he proved that he was much more than that. The Lamano Ranch did not only provide some of the best War horses Vhaluran had yet to see, but Asriel gained strong recognition with his war prowess. Forced to enlist in the military, Asriel quickly moved through the ranks. He soon became a Knight, but the wars ended shortly after his knighting. He was from then on, mainly, a Knight for show. He managed to keep his head out of the Noble Housing feuds that followed the death of King Janos and helped King Marcus restore Vhaluran peace and society. He had clerical powers that he did not use often, except for helping those who needed it. When one asked, he would tell him it was a gift from Drachus that he received during the Janos Wars. He lived a long and full life, passing away of age. He left 2 sons and a daughter behind.

The oldest son, Enrick Lamano, was a brash man and did the opposite of his father by sticking his nose into all the Noble house business and causing trouble whenever he could. Asriel often blamed himself for his elder son’s disposition. He had no known children and no wife, preferring to spend his nights in the taverns, drunk. When Asriel passed away, Enrick took over as the Head of the House. He did run the House for awhile but eventually let things out weigh him. He was found one morning in the back alleyway of his favorite tavern with a dagger shoved into his chest. (It has been discovered that Enrick did in fact have two children, out of wedlock.)

The second child, his daughter, married a priest named Nicolas Swaron and together they ran the ranch. Eleana and Nicolas had one child, Jack. Eleana and her family ran the stables and since Eleana was a low-key person, the stables became low-key.

The youngest son, Richard, did not want to run as head of the house when Enrick passed away. He joined the military and left the running of the house to his sister and brother-in-law. Richard had 3 boys, the oldest one with an Alyrian woman. Richard served as a Bounty Hunter after his time with the military, but soon became aware of a rumor that his sister was sick. Acting on this rumor, Richard had been heading back home when he was assassinated enroute. His middle child, Talin, was with him at the time.

At the death of their father, the other two brothers came back home. There was a family meeting and it was decided that Isaiah, the oldest boy of Richard, would take over as Head. Isaiah was the oldest living male directly descended from Sir Asriel. As a preventive measure, due to the assassination and a recent break of horse theft, Isaiah brought an old friend of his on as a Security Advisor for the Ranch. Isaiah also talked with his brothers and they decided that since there hadn’t been a Knight in the House since their Grandfather that all three would start the road to Knighthood. The House status had dropped drastically since Asriel’s time. It was time to return House Lamano to its former glory.

House Traits-

Lamano is a name that carries a strong heritage of Honor and Compassion. It was written somewhere that Lamano means Blade in some obscure language. (Rumors, of course.) House Lamano is known for its strong religious ties and loyal ties to the people of Vhaluran. This House has commoner roots and does not forget that. It is notable that this House has a strong, although short, Military Background which is the House's current main focus. All male Lamano-blood family are expected to wear their hair in a long, single-braided ponytail. It represents the strong tie they have to Vhaluran, a single bond that reaches in great length.

Notable Characters-

(1) Asriel Lamano – Brought House Lamano from a Merchant House to a Main Military House. Granted Knighthood for his deeds during The Janos Wars and gifted with Clerical powers from Drachus. Helped King Falcourt bring peace back after the Wars and renew religious faith throughout the society.

(2) Enrick Lamano- Elder child of Asriel. Failed to keep the House strong, preferred to spend all his nights drinking. First Lamano to be assassinated.

(3) Richard Lamano- Youngest son of Asriel. He did not want to take the Head of House position at a young age and kept himself busy with other things. He was not a religious man.

(4) Eleana Lamano- Middle child and only daughter of Asriel. Married a priest named Nicolas Swaron. They took care of the Ranch during House Lamano’s tribulations. Nicolas died during a ranching accident a couple of months previous to Richard’s death.

Current Family Members-

Isaiah Lamano- Current head of the House and oldest son of Richard. He is a Knight of Vhaluran and has sucessfully restored House Lamano to its former glory.

Talin Lamano- Middle child of Richard. He is an accomplished Swordsmaster and is the current First-Sergeant of the Vhalurian Military. He is planning on opening a training academy for young warriors.

Erick Lamano- Erick is the youngest child of Richard. It is often said he's a spoiled noble brat. He spent much of his teen years traveling around, which is when he met his future wife. He is working for the Vhalurian Military and he oversees the Ranch house with his wife, Mary. He is currently MIA, rumors that he is dead persist as the seasons pass.

Mary Alice Lamano- Married to Erick during his travels. She was expecting a child, but due to a bandit raid she lost the child. She is the current stablemaster.

Charles Lamano- Cousin to Isaiah, Talin, and Erick. He is Enrick's younger brother. He finally got the courage to leave his Mother and the tavern he'd grown up in as home. He learned of his heritage the same time as Enrick, although he did not immediately leave out to discover his bloodline. He is in the Vhalurian military, and is learning of his bloodline from Isaiah.

Family Members Deceased (Starting Isaiah's Generation)

Jack Swaron- Only child of Eleana Lamano and her late husband Nicolas. He was the Stablemaster of Lamano Ranch. Jack passed away due to some unknown illness.

Enrick Lamano (Junior)- Cousin to Isaiah, Talin, and Erick. Raised by his mother in a tavern outside Vhaluran until he discovered the truth of who his Father was. He is the son of Enrick Lamano, the eldest boy of Asriel. Enrick fell to an Insularii blade.

House d'Lyon

History:

Founded during the reign of King Hadrian Caliborne the noble house of d'Lyon remained a loyal and well respected house until the reign of King Damon Corvinus. It has since returned to prominence during the reign of King Richard Falcourt, but was not restored to nobility until the reign of King Gabriel Caliborne. It has, with the exception of the reign of King Damon Corvinus always served the best interests of the people of the city of Vhaluran and its surrounding countrysides.

During the reign of King Hadrian Caliborne a certain area of the countryside was plagued by a mountain lion. For a few years, the mountain lion slew farmers, travelers, livestock, and game alike. The noble responsible for this territory was indifferent to the suffering of his people. As the toll paid by the land grew, it seemed as if none would lift this curse. However a young guard recently enlisted in the service of the people of the kingdom of Vhaluran was on patrol when he was set upon by the mountain lion. The guard acted quickly to defend himself. The battle had lasted nearly an hour before the beast was laid to rest however, for it had gained much skill in dealing death during its reign of terror. The guard, upon defeating the beast, skinned it, wrapping its hide around him as a cloak, its head draped over his barbut. Upon his return to the city, he was summoned to the hall of King Caliborne, where he was rewarded with the lands of the nobleman whom had allowed the people to suffer for those years. The young guard, named Henri was awarded the heraldry of a lion, and given the last name d'Lyon as well. He was sent to squire under Sir Childeric Graem, until he was knighted.

The children of Henri d'Lyon maintained his tradition of service. Often serving in the guard, until such a time as being taken on as a squire and earning their knighthood. Henri's son Aiden d'Lyon was among those who rose up with First Knight Victor Corvinus to depose then- King Darius Tremont believing this to be the best course of action for the people of Vhaluran. It was one of Aiden's children though which began the downfall of the house d'Lyon. Aiden's three sons, Renauld, Luc, and Yves were all fit warriors, however his youngest son Beau was a jealous and deceitful courtier. When Renauld was wed, he reigned as patriarch of house d'Lyon for only five months before he died under mysterious ends. His wife, with child, returned to her parents home to birth and raise her son with Renauld's trusted master-at-arms to guard over her and the child. Similarly however, Luc and Yves fell to mysterious ends shortly after each was given rule over the house. Beau then took lordship over the lands of the d'Lyon house. It was during this time that King Damon Corvinus sent out several calls for arms to the nobility to defend against various incursions into the lands of the kingdom. Under Beau's lordship the d'Lyon house answered none of the calls. It was thusly stripped of its lands and titles. Shortly there after Beau ended his own life.

This was not be the end of house d'Lyon however. Renauld's son had been given the name Marc, and was given his father's surname d'Lyon. Marc trained in the arts of combat by the same master-at-arms who had trained his father. Knowing his duty, to restore his family name and lands, Marc entered into the guard service when he came of age, under the rule of King Janos Corvinus. He did not in his lifetime restore his family name, but passed down his families history to his son Guillaume. Who in turn joined the guard during the reign of King Marcus Falcourt attempting to restore his family heritage. However, he was unable to do so in his lifetime as well. But as his father did, he passed down record of his families past to his son Leodegrance. It was Leodegrance, whom after his marriage to Alexandrie Belmont, and the founding of d'Lyon stables, was able to restore the d'Lyon name to that of the register of the nobility of Vhaluran. Leodegrance was then able to use the shield and wear the lion fur of his ancestors.

House Targold

Coat of arms coming soon!

Brief History

House Targold was granted noble status by King Gabriel Caliborne in the year 1001 for Sir Williem Targolds years of steadfast service, and the part he played in the rescue of Queen Ingrid Caliborne from the hands of the Insularii.

Williem Targold grew up on a small farm to the south of Vhaluran with his parents and two younger brothers. The father, Kevin, and mother, Ella, were simple farmers whom raised their three boys to be courteous, respectful, hard working, and generous. The sons Williem, Bradley and Adrian grew up without many outside friends and became quite close.

The oldest of the boys, Williem had wanted to become a Knight of Vhaluran since his father told him a story, about the knights whom served King Gareth, when Williem was a child. Since deciding he wanted knighthood, Williem practiced his riding, and fighting skills as often as he could. He left home at the age of 18 to pursue this goal, and joined the army, where he rose to the rank of First Sergeant very quickly. The deed that got him to the First Sergeant position was the death of Jonathan Crose, a man whom had poisoned another Sergeant, Isaiah Lamano. Williem had sworn revenge on the man, and took it one afternoon after Crose had attacked his brother Bradley and Alysha Ravyn. During the battle, Williem cut down Crose, whom, realizing that he would likely be executed if taken to prison, drank poison and killed himself.

By the age of twenty he had been taken as a squire by his former Captain, Sir Gunther Helmutt, and in the same year was knighted for his part in saving Queen Ingrid Caliborne. This accomplishment also is the reason that Sir Williem Targold became the first head of house for the noble House Targold, the first family of commoners to have been given the title without prior family service in an incredibly long time.

House Traits

The traits of House Targold can be read from their Coat of Arms. The golden colour of the shield’s field represents the generosity that every member of the house shows to his fellow man. The black cross formee represents constancy in military service to the kingdom, not grief as is sometimes believed. The supporters are a bear, representing, strength, cunning, and ferocity in protection of ones kindred, and a bull, representing valour, bravery, and again, generosity. The house also holds the belief that serving one’s king and country is more important than family matters, so many of the members of the house are involved in the army, or the church as well.

Notable Characters

Being that the house is just beginning, there are no notable characters from times past.

History of House Valyre

The origins of House Valyre, beyond a lineage which can be traced back to a branch of the Caliborne line, is unknown and unremarkable. The earliest detailed account of House Valyre began during the reign of King Hadrian Caliborne. At the time, House Valyre controlled the ore pits from which King Hadrian purchased the stone needed to begin construction on his keep. The Lord of the House at the time, Robin Valyre, squandered the funds acquired from this deal on personal pleasures, a decision that later generations would come to regret. Although Robin was already an old man when construction began on Hadrian's Keep, he lived on for eighteen years after. Of all the Valyre men, Robin had the largest family. Five wives, sixteen true children, and twelve natural born. Of course, more than half the family split and fought and died in the following conflicts between Caliborne-Tremont-Corvinus.

In the following generations, the House was in steady decline. They still provided ore and stone to the Kingdom, but with Hadrian's Keep completed, there were no more large orders coming in, and the opulent lifestyle that Robin Valyre had set quickly ate away at the wealth of the House. It wasn't long at all before the Debt began to build. Royce Valyre, the third lord after Robin Valyre, sold off the ore pits in order to stave off this Debt, and took measures to cut the spending of the House, but to little avail in the end. Without the ore pits, the House had to scramble to find some way to earn enough coin to stay in the King's good graces.

Riyan Valyre followed Royce as his heir, and he began a new tradition within the House. As a child, Riyan was a fan of the Lists, never missing a tournament and joust, developing a strong interest in the martial arts. Up until this point, House Valyre was known for it's economic policies, having produced not a single knight or warrior in all of recorded history. Riyan Valyre was the first knight to wear the Raven-embossed heraldry of House Valyre. Wielding a sword named Dawn, purchased generations ago by Robin Valyre, he quickly earned a name for himself by winning tournament after tournament. Riyan was a terror on the lists, hailed as the greatest champion to wield a lance, mace, or blade. He had a long and fruitful career as a champion of the tournament, and it wasn't long after he retired from the lists that the Janos Wars began. Given his reputation in the tourneys, he was called upon by his King to go to war, and so he went. Whatever his skill in the tourneys, he was not prepared for real war, and was the first noble to die, slain in a skirmish with the Tyreans. Dawn was sent back to Vhaluran and given to his teenage son, Reyln.

When Reyln came of age he joined the Vhalurian military as a soldier in the Janos Wars. He served for most of his adulthood, slowly rising in rank until he was in command of a raiding squad of forty soldiers. He and his men weren't the most infamous of raiding squads, but they were effective. When the wars came to an end, Reyln stayed on with the Vhalurian military, serving as a border guard and patrolman. Several years after the war, he married and raised a family, though circumstance would leave him with the third born as the only survivor. His first born was killed during a skirmish with the Mhordul, and when seeking revenge would Reyln be shot in the spine and left crippled for the rest of his life.

Rialt grew into his father's image, a soldier through and through. Though he came of age too late to participate in the Janos Wars, he still joined the military to patrol Vhalurian territory in the aftermath. The Janos Wars did much to drain House Valyre of it's wealth, and so did circumstance. With his father crippled, there was little that the young man could do but spend what coin his grandfather had earned as a tournament champion to pay the staff of the House, and the doctors and surgeons to ease his father's pain. Coin was scarce in the years following the war, and Rialt was forced to take loans to pay for all of his expenses. Eventually, he married a merchant's daughter and the coin provided from the union would keep House Valyre afloat for a few years. Eventually, however, his wife would leave him and so would her father's support. Without the gold provided from the marriage, House Valyre fell apart. Unable to afford his staff and guards, and unable to repay those he had borrowed from, Rialt was forced to sell everything he owned and join the town guard, thus completing House Valyre's fall. Almost a year later, Rialt would be slain alongside then King Gabriel Caliborne. Since his body wasn't recovered until a few days after the death of the King, some rumors originally implicated him in the death of the king, though it was learned that the death of both men could be laid at the feet of Harlock Falcourt.

House Traits

Currently defunct, House Valyre is referenced in the past term. Before it's fall, House Valyre was never a particularly powerful or influential House, though during Riyan's rule, it did earn some fame due to his accomplishments in tournaments.

Notable Characters
